Building Self Energy
Intro:
Sometimes our inner world can feel crowded. An anxious part wants reassurance, a critical part wants us to do better, an exhausted part wants everything to stop, and another part may be trying desperately to hold all of them together.
This meditation offers an opportunity to step out of that internal tug-of-war and practice relating to your parts from a little more spaciousness, curiosity, and compassion. Rather than asking any part to disappear, you’ll gently explore what it is like to notice your internal experience while also connecting with the steadier qualities often described in parts work as Self-energy.
What to expect:
You’ll begin by settling into the present and noticing what is already happening internally. From there, you’ll be invited to notice whether a particular part wants your attention and to become curious about how you experience it.
You may notice a part through an emotion, thought, body sensation, memory, image, impulse, or simply a sense that something in me feels this way.
The practice also explores how you feel toward that part. If irritation, fear, urgency, numbness, or a desire to fix it appears, those reactions are welcomed as parts too rather than treated as obstacles.
Gradually, you’ll be invited to notice small qualities of calm, curiosity, compassion, clarity, courage, or connectedness and practice allowing those qualities to take up a little more space.
This may be helpful if you:
are familiar with or curious about parts-based work
feel pulled between several conflicting emotions or needs
tend to become overwhelmed by one particular emotional state
want to practice relating to your parts rather than fighting them
are learning to recognize Self-energy
want to build greater curiosity and compassion toward your internal experience
How to use it:
This practice is best approached with something that feels manageable rather than your most painful or traumatic material.
You do not need to uncover memories, understand why a part exists, or make anything change. If a part does not want to step back—or if compassion and calm simply are not available today—that is not a failure of the practice.
You can keep your eyes open, shift your attention back toward the room, move your body, or stop at any point.
If visualization is difficult for you, the imagery in this meditation is optional. You can work with the idea of warmth, spaciousness, light, or stepping back without needing to see anything internally.
About this approach:
Self-energy does not have to arrive as profound peace. It may be much quieter than that. Perhaps you notice one percent more curiosity. A little less urgency. A moment when you can recognize: Something in me is hurting. Rather than becoming completely consumed by the hurt.
Or perhaps you can tell a protective part: I see how hard you have been working. You do not have to disappear for me to listen.
Parts work is not about getting rid of the pieces of ourselves that are anxious, angry, critical, grieving, or afraid. It is about changing the relationship we have with them. Sometimes the shift begins simply by discovering that you can be with what is happening inside without immediately needing to fight it, fix it, or become it.
